Guide to layer paint to build shadow and form.

I opted to use a two part toning because I wanted my water area to be a true deep blue. A brown underpainting would have prevented that so I opted for a two hue underpainting.
Working in Shadows over the undertone. Just a black color that was mixed from a blue/brown. Lines from subtraction technique.
Simple hues going in slightly darker than reality. No careful concern for anything other than form at this point.
More hues and refinement of shadow.
Whites going in a couple values dark. I wanted to keep these much darker than how they will appear when done so the form transitions are easier.
Blocked in some basic water and the digital quality is a little better now. Allowed to dry overnight which allowed for all areas to be solid without concern for mudding.
Working in correct tones now. White a little over exposed on digital.
Reflected light and some details being put in. Some refinement to shadow areas as well.
Oops. Even artists make mistakes. Water blue is too bright. - see low middle area for wrong blue.
More details and correct blue water.
Water details done and lightened at the top some. The sun light is behind the viewer slightly so the water should be a very deep blue.
